Western Mongolia is not just home for Mongolia’s highest mountains but also home to crystal clear rivers and large freshwater lakes. Three of these large freshwater lakes are Khoton, Khurgan and Dayan lakes which lie in the Altai Tavan Bogd National Park and they are home to abundant fish life (Arctic grayling, Trout, Altai Osman, Lenok (Brachymystax). If you love fishing and relaxing in the nature, we are offering a tour which gives you the opportunity of fishing at the idyllic lakes and enjoying the pristine nature of Altai Tavan Bogd national park.

Fishing season

Fishing season in Mongolia starts legally on June 15 and ends on November 1.

Itinerary

Day 1. Western Mongolia & nomad herder family

Take the morning flight to Olgii from Ulaanbaatar. We will welcome you at the airport and if needed, we can visit a fishing store before starting our fishing tour. We will drive to the south east of Altai Tavan Bogd National Park where and arrive in mountain valleys of Tsengel village where we will be staying at a nomad herder family for the night. The man of the family is an eagle falconer which gives us the chance of seeing his majestic golden eagle and furs of preys hunted. You will feel the warm welcome of the family and get an idea of how the nomads spend their day in your short stay.

Day 2. Fishing holiday begins

In the morning after the breakfast and good bye to the family we will drive further in the mountain valleys to Dayan Lake for fishing. Arrive in the noon at the lake and spend the rest of the day fishing. Overnight in tent.

Day 3. Khurgan Lake

We will drive to the west of NP and today’s destination is the twin lakes of NP (Khoton and Khurgan). Two large freshwater lakes connected with a narrow channel. We will be fishing at the shores of Khurgan lake for the day. Overnight.

Day 4. Waterfall, Khoton lake

Start the day taking a short hike to a beautiful waterfall in Baga Turgen valley which is near to the lakes. This 10m high waterfall is worth visiting. After that our fishing trip continues at the shores of Khoton Lake. Overnight.

Day 5. Khoton lake, petroglyphs

Near our campsite there is an archaeological site and we will explore ancient rock carvings. Full day for fishing, swimming and relaxing.

Day 6. Khovd river

Drive back toward Ulgii along Khovd River giving breaks at good fishing spots. Overnight.  

Day 7. Ulgii

Last opportunity for fishing in the morning till noon. Arrive in Ulgii in the afternoon and check in the hotel. After some rest you can go for souvenir shopping or take leisurely walk in the town center. Olgii town is famous for colorfully embroidered Kazakh hand crafts.

Day 8. Departure day

We will transfer you to the airport for your flight back to Ulaanbaatar. End of the tour.
